Why Visa is tossing loans onto the blockchain

Every time you tap a card, someone in the background gets into a tiny timing tug‑of‑war: the card network wants its money on a daily schedule, while the merchant or card program might not collect funds from customers until later. That short-term cash mismatch is boring in theory and terrifying in practice for fast-growing programs that don’t yet have deep bank lines.

Enter Visa’s onchain lending experiment announced on Sept. 8. Instead of sending banks or warehouses to cover the gap, Visa hooked up with an onchain protocol — Credit Coop — to offer revolving facilities denominated in stablecoins. The idea is delightfully hybrid: smart contracts move and timestamp token flows, while Visa’s private settlement files stay the referee for underwriting and facility sizing.

How the system actually works, in snackable chunks

A participating card program can borrow from a stablecoin line to meet Visa’s settlement due date. The money moves to Visa’s settlement address, and when real cardholder payments arrive, they get funneled through a programmable lockbox (called a Spigot). That contract services interest, replenishes the line, and only then lets leftover cash hit the borrower’s bank account.

Onchain records capture draws and paybacks — think timestamps, token transfers, and an execution log — while Visa’s secure feed delivers the authorized settlement files that tie those transfers to real obligations. Put together, public blockchain evidence and private settlement data give lenders a clearer picture without exposing every commercial term to the internet.

Visa has said the stablecoin‑linked program count and volumes are growing fast: more than 160 programs in the company’s fiscal Q2 2026, payment activity roughly doubled year over year for those programs, and recent settlement flows annualized to around $20 billion. Credit Coop reported thousands of onchain events too — in the neighborhood of several thousand borrows and repayments — across the Visa‑linked facilities.

Perks, puzzles, and “don’t-take-this-as-the-final-word” caveats

Advantages are obvious: lenders get a senior, program‑level claim on incoming card receipts that’s serviced by code operating at blockchain speed, and Visa supplies the underwriting intelligence. For smaller or newer programs this can be a neat bridge to steadier, traditional credit.

But the triumphant-sounding stats deserve a reality check. When Visa or Credit Coop talk about, say, $2.5 billion of financed settlement since 2023, that’s cumulative throughput — the same dollars can be lent, repaid, and lent again — not the amount sitting at risk on any single day. Similarly, claims of zero defaults or rate reductions need context: we don’t get facility‑level pricing, lender lists, or full waterfall rules in the public writeups.

There are concrete examples showing traction: one payments company has been the dominant user, reportedly moving roughly $2 billion of cumulative settlement volume through thousands of borrow and repayment events over a multiyear span. Another card issuer appears to have used the onchain facility while scaling, then graduated to a larger institutional debt package — which hints at a role for onchain credit as a bridge, not necessarily the endgame.

Technical and legal boundaries matter. The Spigot contract enforces where incoming cash goes, but it can’t magic up customer payments that never materialize or resolve disputes on its own. The protocol also assigns powers to human‑controlled roles (an arbiter, a Spigot owner), and the docs flag edge cases like diverted flows or contested revenue contracts. Public chain logs provide excellent execution evidence, yet the true extent of lender protections, first‑loss cushions, guarantees or insurance typically remains in off‑chain legal papers we don’t see.

Bottom line: this is a clever, practical use of blockchain tooling — combining onchain transparency with permissioned underwriting — that solves a recurrent cash‑flow itch for card programs. It also gives Visa more sway in the plumbing of card financing: the network creates the timing gap, and its data helps lenders decide how big a bridge is safe. Whether this becomes a mainstream alternative to traditional credit or mostly a stepping stone for startups will depend on how the economics, disclosures, and legal wrappers evolve.
